Would you like to get your hands on some of the hardest rocks in the world to find? Perhaps you have found some rare stones and added them to your collection. Although you may have found some beauties in your time, some of the hardest rocks are still likely elusive.

The following 10 rocks are the hardest in the world to find. In addition, we tell you the hardest rock to find first, so put it on your bucket list.

What Is the Hardest Rock to Find? (#1)

The hardest rock to find is Painite. A British mineralogist first found this rare gem mineral in Myanmar but at first, they thought it was a Ruby. It wasn’t until the 1950s until Painite was found to be a new gemstone. Since it is so rare, it can cost up to $60,000 per carat.

Painite is so rare that as of 2004, only two had been cut into gemstones. If you are planning on trying to pick up one of these gemstones for yourself, you will have to travel to Myanmar but even then, you could spend a lifetime looking for one and never find it.

Over the past couple of decades, they have found many fragments and additional crystals, but it is still very rare.

Is Tanzanite Hard to Find? (#2)

Tanzanite a very rare mineral that is hard to find because it is only found in a specific part of the world. The only place that this gemstone is mined is at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in a very small mining area. The Tanzanite supply is depleting and may be gone within the next two decades.

When Tanzanite was first discovered in the 1960s, Tiffany & Co recognized how beautiful it was and, thanks to their marketing efforts, it became one of the most popular gemstones in the world. It’s blue color comes naturally but when it is he treated at high temperatures, the blue color comes through even stronger.

Tanzanite is a very expensive gemstone now but it is likely that it will continue to increase in price as the amount of available Tanzanite drops.

Is Larimar Hard To Find? (#3)

Since it is only possible to find larimar in a small area of the Dominican Republic, it is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. It is still possible to find larimar on the beaches of Barahona but it is very difficult to do so.

Mining for this precious gemstone has been ongoing since 1916 and continues today but they are only now finding the best gemstones at about a 500 foot depth.

Sadly, many people are unaware of this precious gemstone. Although it is beautiful, it is in short supply and it is mostly sold to tourists who visit the island, usually on a cruise. It makes a nice keepsake, but the supply would be quickly depleted if the market was opened up worldwide.

Where Can You Find Paraiba Tourmaline? (#4)

Tourmaline is a fairly common gemstone but Paraiba Tourmaline is an extremely rare variety. It is a beautiful gemstone that was first mined in Brazil. Additional deposits of this green and blue gemstone were found in other areas, including in Mozambique and Nigeria.

This gemstone is so rare that it was only found for the first time in 1989. Because of the beautiful blue color, it is loved by many people and used in a wide variety of jewelry. The most valuable of the Paraiba Tourmaline gemstones are those with bright blue neon colors but there are also others that have a green color to them.

Unlike many other types of gemstones, the most important factor in rating a Paraiba Tourmaline is color. Clarity is also important, but even if you are able to see an inclusion with your naked eye, it’s not going to make much of a difference in the value. The gems do need to be cut properly so that they show off everything they have to offer.

Is Black Opal More Expensive Than Gold? (#5)

A high-quality black opal can be worth up to $11,000 USD per carat. Since 1 carat is equal to 0.2 g and a gram of gold is worth about $55, black opal is far more valuable than gold.

Opals come in many different types and colors, but the black opal is the rarest of them all. It has a dark tone to the body that can be anywhere from black to gray. There can also be a number of other colors in the opal, all of which make the stones unique and beautiful.

Black opals are mined in Lightning Ridge Australia, an area in northern New South Wales. The area is so well known for opals that it was even named it the ‘gemstone Island’ for New South Wales back in 2008. Along with being found in this area, they can also be found in southern Australia at Mintabie.

Where Is Grandidierite Found? (#6)

The first Grandidierite gemstones were found in 1902 in Southern Madagascar at the cliffs of Andrahomana. Other sources of the gemstone have been found in multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Malawi, Algeria, the Czech Republic, and even Antarctica.

Even though you can find Grandidierite in many areas around the world, the mining tends to be limited and there are very few of those gemstones that exist. Once a source is found, it is typically used up very quickly, so the gemstone itself is still very rare.

Because of its rarity, it is not uncommon for Grandidierite to cost up to $20,000 per carat. As is the case with any gemstone, however, the price you pay per carat is going to depend upon the color, clarity, and cut.

Is Red Beryl Rare? (#7)

Beryl is a mineral that comes in a variety of colors, with red beryl being the rarest. It is found in a number of locations in North America, including New Mexico, Utah, Black Range, and Mexico. The right conditions need to be present for manganese beryllium, and other minerals to crystallize as Red Beryl.

Although it is possible to find Red Beryl, finding it large enough to make it into a gemstone is what really makes this mineral valuable. Some of the smaller pieces that are matched for color and are typically less than 0.2 carats can sell for around $1000 per carat. On the other hand, a large Red Beryl gemstone, which is very rare, can cost thousands of dollars per carat.

Some people confuse Red Beryl gemstones with red rubies. Although they may look similar in some ways, it is the base composition that really sets them apart. Red Beryl has a base composition of beryl while rubies have a base composition of corundum.

Other gemstones are also found in the beryl family, although they are not nearly as rare as Red Beryl. These include the Emerald, aquamarine, morganite, heliodor, goshenite, and bixbite.

Where Do You Find Ammolite? (#8)

Ammolite is only found in the Bear Paw formation in Canada and down into the northern United States. You can find them between Saskatchewan and Alberta and as far south as Montana. The highest quality Ammolite gemstones are found in southern Alberta along the eastern rocky mountain slopes.

Although this gem can be found in a fairly wide area, most of the commercial production is along the St. Mary River in Alberta, Canada. It is a rare gemstone, because there are limited amounts available and it is only mined in the specific part of the world.

Unlike many other gemstones that are formed of various minerals, the Ammolite comes from the fossilized remains of ammonites. It has been used in jewelry for about 60 years but it was only in 1981 that it was officially recognized as a gemstone.

Caution needs to be taken when searching for Ammolite online. You may find mention of ammonite but that is just the fossilized remains of ammonites and not the gem-quality fossils that are used for making jewelry.

How Much Is Fulgurite Worth? (#9)

A high-quality fulgurite that would be used for jewelry could easily cost between $50 – $100. Lower quality fulgurite is far less expensive, and you may only be able to get $10 for one at a local shop.

Fulgurite is formed when lightning strikes the ground where dry sand is in place. The sand needs to reach a minimum of 1800°C in order for silica glass to be created. Lightning can easily cause those temperatures when it strikes the ground. Some of the more complex specimens have multiple roots that look like a branching tree.

It is not difficult to find specimens of fulgurite if you take your time and look in the right areas. The real difficulty is finding a fulgurite that is of high quality and can be used for jewelry. It is not the rarest gemstone but it is a rare enough occurrence to make the list.

Why Are Red Diamonds So Rare? (#10)

Red diamonds are rare because there is a specific process that needs to take place naturally during their formation to cause the red color. According to some diamond experts, the diamond has a lattice deficit, that allows light to bend in a way that the red color shows through.

Although diamonds themselves are not necessarily rare there are certain colors that are extremely rare in nature. You would have a much harder time finding rubies, sapphires, and emeralds than you would a diamond and they would be much more expensive. Red diamonds, however, are so rare that they could easily fetch $1 million for a carat.

Red diamonds may be found in any diamond mine, but very few of them have actually found one. Some of the parts of the world where red diamonds have been discovered include Russia, Australia, Brazil, and India.
